TALLAHASSEE — Governor Charlie Crist today recognized Ruth Hall as this week’s Points of Light for outstanding volunteerism. Ruth has been a volunteer with Project FOCUS, a tutoring and mentoring program that serves students within the Progress Village Community of Hillsborough County.
“Ruth’s commitment to helping children in her community is truly inspirational,” said Governor Crist. “Volunteers like Ruth play a pivotal role in the development of Florida’s future leaders.”
For over five years, Ruth Hall has helped to bridge the gap between schools and the community by serving as a volunteer with Project FOCUS. Ruth donated over 800 books and assisted Project FOCUS in organizing a community literacy fair to promote readership among parents and students. As a result of her efforts, many of the parents and students in attendance initiated reading circles that promote reading in the home.  Ruth often volunteers on the weekends and evenings by conducting training in technology, instructional techniques, dropout prevention, gang and youth violence, parental awareness, literacy, and grant writing.
The Governor’s Points of Light Award, sponsored by Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises, recognizes a Florida resident who demonstrates exemplary service to the community.  Award recipients are announced each week.  A panel of judges composed of leaders in the areas of volunteerism and service evaluate all nominations and make recommendations to the Governor.  The Volunteer Florida Foundation manages the program.  For more information, or to nominate, go to www.VolunteerFloridaFoundation.org.
